Adolphe Roehn (March 5, 1780 - October 19, 1867) was a French painter, draftsman and lithographer. Roehn exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1799 to 1866, winning a second class medal in 1819. [1] Between 1802 and 1814, under the direction of Baron Vivant Denon, director of the Louvre, he made a series of drawings illustrating the Napoleonic campaigns in Italy. [2] After the bloody Battle of Eylau in 1807, Vivant Denon held a propaganda contest that required participants to portray a certain scene from the event. Roehn was awarded a "gold medal of encouragement" (the winning entry was Napoleon on Antoine-Jean Gros' Eylau battlefield) . [3] Like his son, Jean Alphonse Roehn, he taught drawing at the Louis-Legrand School. [1] The painting in question depicts an after the battle Gold leaf frame Restorations present but the painting is on the first canvas, perhaps a relining would improve its quality.
