Born into a family of painters, Lary studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Karel Verlat and Edgar Farasyn. his style is related to the Hague School, somewhere between realism and impressionism with a great sense of atmosphere. He had contacts with Willem and Jacob Maris, Anton Mauve and Josef Israels. Thematically, he chose farms and farmer's interiors for forest and heath landscapes, but he also painted figures and still lifes. He worked for years in Heeze in Brabant.
