Condition Report:
Case: The case is in good condition with visible signs of wear throughout commensurate with age. Previous light polish in the past, more visible to the right side of the case. Service crystal and crown. The bracelet has visible surface scratches and wear throughout. The bezel insert has faded slightly.

Dial: The dial is in overall very good condition. The luminous markers and hands remain intact and have normal signs of age throughout. The luminous material has aged to a warmer hue. The hands are likely later added period correct hands.

Movement: The movement is running at time of cataloguing, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.

Catalogue Note:
The Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic watches in the world with the richest history. It may be hard to believe today that Submariners were not given a date window until 1969, 16 years after the first Submariner and indeed 2 years after the first Sea-dweller. The very first generation of Submariners that features a date window is the reference 1680. Like preceding references, the reference 1680 features a 40 mm stainless steel case, a stainless steel Oyster bracelet, and a black dive bezel. The presence of the date window on the dial also meant that the crystal above it now had a Cyclops magnification lens affixed to it. The automatic movement used to power the Submariner 1680 is the caliber 1575, which is similar to the caliber 1570 with a date module.
