Roman 18K+ Gold Signet Ring - Imperial Eagle

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A beautiful gold signet ring with a large oval face featuring an intaglio depicting an imperial eagle, symbol of the Roman legions. The face, contiguous shank, and bezel are all comprised of hammered gold sheet that is 80% gold, equivalent to 18K+. The Imperial Roman eagle was known as the aquila. The aquila was the symbol of the Roman legion, and, by around 100 BCE, each company of soldiers carried a standard bearing an eagle. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); gold quality: 80% gold, equivalent to 18K+; US ring size: 2.25; total weight: 5.7 grams.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-American collection, 1980s to 2000s; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s
