Roman 22K+ Gold Earrings w/ Glass Beads (pr)

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of elegant gold hoop earrings, each comprised of 98% gold (equivalent to 22K+), curved into a teardrop form and an open hook with a bauble at its tip for placement through the earlobe. A delicate granulated disc is set into one side of each teardrop, demarcating a thinner part of the wire that is strung with a single blue-green glass bead. Another bead hangs at the end of a long gold wire that wraps around the loop and swings freely. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Made wearable with modern hooks (solid 14K gold) and jump rings (solid 10K gold). Size of each: 0.7" W x 2" H (1.8 cm x 5.1 cm); ancient gold is 98% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 3.9 grams

Provenance: ex-Johnson collection, Houston, Texas, USA, acquired at auction between 2010 and 2013

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
