Roman Bone Votive Figure of Venus

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $1000**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Carved from an ungulate bone, this is a pretty votive sculpture, probably of the goddess Venus (Aphrodite). She is nude from the waist up, with a thick swath of fabric tied below her slender waist. Atop her head, her hair is in a part, with a rounded polos-style crown. She once had articulated arms that attached to her sides. Venus, the goddess of love, sex, and beauty, is depicted here (as she always was) with the ideal Greek body - small, perky breasts, a narrow waist, and elaborate wavy hair. The votive statue may have been placed in a small household altar, or given as an offering at a temple dedicated to the goddess. Size: 1.25" W x 6" H (3.2 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Jeff Hunter collection, New York/Florida, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
