Roman Bronze Animal Leg Fragment

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze section from a leg belonging to an animal - perhaps a horse given the pointed detail indicative of the proximal sesamoid bone (in accordance with equine limb anatomy). Horses signified power and military prowess. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. A wonderful ancient bronze work with rich green and russet patina. Size: 3.625" H (9.2 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition Report: A fragment from a larger sculpture. Losses to peripheries and normal surface wear/abrasions commensurate with age. Lovely patina - deep green and aqua verdigris - has developed over the ages.
