Roman Bronze Chariot Rein Bracket w/ Guide Loop

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-bronze rein guide meant to attach to the front of a Roman chariot or the top of an individual horse saddle. The arched body bears a quartet of perforated attachment tabs as well as a thick lower loop protruding from the bottom, a conical rein wrap projecting from the top, and a stocky guide loop on the verso. A pair of decorative, spade-shaped embellishments flanking the lower bracket body as well as an incised striation along the front imbue the bracket body with an ornamental presentation. Matte brown and green patina cover the entire composition in layers of color. Size: 7.8" L x 1.875" W x 4.875" H (19.8 cm x 4.8 cm x 12.4 cm)

Condition Report: Repair to one side of arched bracket, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Fissure to rein loop, with slight bending to some peripheries, light encrustations and abrasions to body, loop, and conical protrusion, and nicks to body, protrusion, and loop. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
