Roman Bronze Crossbow Fibula Finger Rings & Hair Coil

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period to Byzantine Empire, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A group of 4 ancient bronze adornments: a crossbow fibula, a hair coil, a ring, and ring fragment. The fragmentary signet face is engraved with a lion, and the intact signet is etched with an asymmetrical linear motif. The hair coil is made from a thick bronze wire, coiled into a tight spiral for a woman to weave into their locks of hair. The "crossbow" fibula brooch was used to fasten garments, and this type is often found in military graves, and they seem to have been very popular with the Roman army due to their weapon symbolism. Size of fibula: 2.6" L x 1.75" W (6.6 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Boulder, Colorado collection, before 2010
