Roman Bronze Deer, Recumbent Position

[ translate ]

Roman, late Republic to early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A beautiful cast-bronze deer lying in a recumbent position atop an integral tiered rectangular plinth, the hollow underside of which is filled with lead for added stability. The deer rests with each leg folded beneath its slender body, has an upturned tab-shaped tail protruding from the posterior, and has a thick neck. The conical head is turned dramatically to the right and boasts incised almond-shaped eyes, a thick snout with delineated lips and nostrils, perky ears, and nubbin antler bases. Fine layers of brown and green patina envelop this charming sculpture, and scattered abraded areas reveal the original golden-brown bronze color beneath. Size: 4.4" L x 1.8" W x 4.875" H (11.2 cm x 4.6 cm x 12.4 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, collected in the 1960s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
