Roman Bronze Head of Deity w/ Hook - Apollo

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $300**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely cast-bronze head of a deity, perhaps Apollo, the god of music, poetry, art, and knowledge. He flaunts his impressive coiffure which flares laterally outward from the sides of his head, his bangs lined with a quartet of small roundels flanking a central protruding hook which curves towards the back of his head. His serene visage is composed of almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose above full lips, a rounded chin, and a wide forehead, and beneath his head is a crested, striated gorget. The hook atop the brow suggests this item was perhaps used as a steelyard weight. Size: 1.7" W x 1.6" H (4.3 cm x 4.1 cm); 3.125" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#145522
Condition Report: Small losses to neck line and one interior area of coiffure, with light softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits as well as great green and russet patina throughout.
