Roman Bronze Patera Handle w/ Ram Head

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine, hollow-cast bronze example of a patera handle terminating in the head of a ram. The handle has several grooves along its length, and the attachment panel at the end opposite the ram head illustrates how it would have attached to the side of the patera bowl. The patera was used for serving drinks and food at banquets, or for carrying libations used in religious ceremonies and funerals. High-quality bronze examples like this one often have either a ram or wolf head finial on their handles. Size: 5.4" W x 1.4" H (13.7 cm x 3.6 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
