Roman Bronze Ring with Hippocamp

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-bronze ring with a thin band, gradually-expanding shoulders, and a flat, ovoid face. The face is stamped in two halves, with the left depicting the front end of a leaping horse, and the right half depicting the scaly fish-form lower body of a hippocamp. The right half appears to have been a mis-strike as the back of the horse body appears to be the same size as the lowest-most groove of the fish body near the bottom periphery of the ring face. A rare and interesting example of wearable Roman art! Size (ring): 0.9" W x 0.8" H (2.3 cm x 2 cm); size (face): 0.8" L x 0.625" W (2 cm x 1.6 cm); US ring size 7.5.

Provenance: ex-Dere Family Collection, NY acquired in 1980's-2000's

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#144251
Condition Report: Wearable as shown. Slight bending to overall form of band and face, with light softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Fine green patina throughout. Stamped image on right half is perhaps a mis-strike due to orientation.
