Roman Bronze Situla w/ Handle

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A hammered-bronze situla with a flared base. The bell-shaped body has a smooth walls, a deep interior cavity, a corseted neck with slightly flared, flat rim, and two applied terminals of nipple form. Each terminal holds a side of the parabolic bail handle which can easily move within its housing and when at rest nestles against the flat rim of the vessel. The situla form was originally made for cooling and serving wine at banquets; others were used to hold ashes, or were buried with offerings in tombs. This example was most likely made specifically for mourning the dead. Size: 10.4" W x 9.4" H (26.4 cm x 23.9 cm)

Provenance: purchased from William Froelich, New York, USA in 1997; Mr. Froelich had owned it in New York since the 1970’s.

Condition Report: Small dents on the surface, especially on one side of the body. Rim is slightly bent upwards in one area. Handle is in nice condition and functional. Pretty pale green patina.
