Roman Bronze Zoomorphic Vessel Leg

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful, bronze, zoomorphic leg for a vessel, finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process. The animal head at the top represents a lion; take note of its a marvelous visage with large eyes, a prominent snout, round ears, and a roaring mouth. The body of the leg curves outward and resolves in the wild feline's foot which is placed atop an orb. This imagery brings to mind the Albani lion (1st century Rome) in the collection of the Louvre (inventory number Ma 1355) which was possibly inspired by a Greek statue and in turn likely inspired the famous Medici lions (one being Roman, 2nd century CE and the pendant created in 1598). Size: 0.95" W x 2.6" H (2.4 cm x 6.6 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-The Time Machine, Mark Reid collection, Orlando, Florida, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
