[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE; Pre-Colombian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec / Mezcala culture, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A collection of 11 brass, bronze, stone, and glass items, most are fragments from larger statues or vessels. Parts include a large, hollow, brass sandaled foot, bronze arms, hands, horse head, griffin head, eagle head with tenon, stylized figural pendant, tiered finial, and a lion foot cast via the lost wax method. The circular glass ingot with planar faces and rounded peripheries is a solid piece in a dark brown-red hue. A fabulous group that exemplifies ancient Roman metallurgy casting and glass work techniques, replete with expertly delineated forms and gorgeous green patina throughout! The last item is a petite bead, carved from greenstone into the form of a crouching man, pierced laterally for suspension - this piece is a Pre-Columbian carving, perhaps from the Olmec culture. Size (foot): 3" L x 1.5" W (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm); (stone bead): 0.8" L x 0. 25" W (2 cm x 0.6 cm)
