Roman / Byzantine 18K+ Gold / Amethyst Necklace
Late Roman / Early Byzantine Period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A stunning ancient necklace, composed of thick, 79% gold (equivalent to 18K+) articulated wire spacers, each with a delicate loop for attachment to a flattened teardrop-shaped amethyst bead. These beads have had gold wires inserted through them, which then link into the spacers' loops. The clasp consists of two ornate openwork gold discs, each featuring a wheel-like motif with curled spirals at its terminals. A simple hook clasp, commonly used during this period, completes the necklace and makes it wearable today. Length of strand: 17.5" L (44.4 cm); gold quality: 79% gold, equivalent to 18K+.
