Roman Carnelian, Agate, Faience, & Glass Bead Necklace

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A gorgeous necklace composed of dozens of beads in hues of crimson, burgundy, pearl, citrine, amethyst, cream, wheat, and sage. The main body of the necklace boasts several red beads made from faience, carnelian, and agate which alternate with clear glass beads, each with several integral threads of opaque white glass. Smaller red beads fill the outer areas on each side, and dozens of petite discoid beads shaped from faience and stone cap the terminals. Strung in modern times and secured with a brass French hook and lobster clasp combo, this is an intricate and elegant accessory! Size (necklace): 19" L (48.3 cm); size (largest bead): 0.4" W (1 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s or 1980s
