Roman Copper Bust of a Man w/ Silver Belt
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely hollow copper alloy figure skillfully cast using the lost wax (cire perdue) method depicting the bust of a man. Dressed in a short sleeved tunic and lustrous inlaid belt composed of 40% silver, the figure stares out from round eyes under an arched brow, with an open mouth, as though mid-speech, topped by a flat nose. Luscious locks of hair crown his ovoid visage as he bends his right arm at the elbow, holding a fisted hand in front of him at his waist. Looking closely, one will notice that the artist intricately cast wrinkles into the figure's clothing; an exquisite detail that grants a more naturalistic appearance. Enveloped in a rich patina evocative of imperial Rome, a striking piece from the ancient world! Size: 2.25" L x 2" W (5.7 cm x 5.1 cm); 3.25" H (8.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000
