Beautiful and special fragment of a Roman Roof tile (Tegula) with inscription LEG XIIII. In full called Legio XIV Gemina. This roof tile originates from, or used in a Castellum (army camp) where the 14th Roman Legion was stationed. The 14th Legion was one of the four Legions that Emperor Claudius used in his invasion of Britain. Material - baked roof tile Dating: Roman, 1st-4th century AD. Origin: European. Dimensions: 140 x 130 x 25 mm Condition: very good, with the usual signs of old age. Provenance. the seller warrants that he has obtained this item legally. Coming from a Dutch collection from the 1970s. See the scans for a clear impression. Registered shipping from the Netherlands. Important information: For transport within the European Union, no export licence is required for this lot. Because of the importance of this object, an export license must be requested when shipped outside the European Union. This should be done via the Heritage Inspection of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. This can only be done after the auction and may take some time.
