Roman Glass Cup w/ Etched Designs & Iridescence
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A large free-blown translucent glass cup with intricate etched decorations around the exterior walls. The vessel sits on a petite flattened base and rises with tall walls and a fire polished rim. The etched patterns are comprised of concentric rings, encircling ovals, diamonds, and vertical pillar-like lines. This cup boasts rainbow iridescence on a large portion of the interior and exterior, adding to its beautiful form. Translucent glass was highly desirable for Romans, because of the wonder that transparent yet solid objects held. Size: 4" W x 4" H (10.2 cm x 10.2 cm)
