Roman Glass Double Unguentarium w/ Rigaree & Trailing

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An elegant example of a double unguentarium created from translucent glass of an attractive blue-green hue. The vessel is composed of two cylindrical chambers that are fused along the interior seam with a flat, stable base, slender bodies, flared rims, and four columns of wavy rigaree that oscillate up the bodies. Coursing around the midsections of each chamber is a single trail of glass that creates a ribbed presentation. Covered in thick, flaky, brilliant iridescence in silvery and rainbow hues, this is a gorgeous example of fine Roman glass! Size: 2.4" W x 3.9" H (6.1 cm x 9.9 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

#144101
Condition Report: Repair to lower half of one chamber, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Three small areas of loss to interior surfaces: one near repaired area, and two along upper shoulder of opposite chamber. Losses to areas of trailing and rigaree in several areas as shown. Nicks and abrasions to chambers, rims, and applied trailing and rigaree, with light encrustations, and micro-bubbling within glass matrix. Incredible iridescence throughout.
