Roman Glass Pitcher w/ Elegant Trail Handle

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century. CE. This beautiful free-blown glass pitcher sits upon a concave base and rises into a globular body with a long cylindrical neck and collared rim. A trailed handle was applied to the shoulder then pulled and folded in a taffy-like manner at the rim where it rose a little over the mouth while the glass was still molten to form a ribbon shape. The glass displays aqua hues and translucent areas that are complimented by layers of rainbow iridescence that developed as the vessel aged. An elegantly formed pitcher that truly showcases ancient Roman artistic mastery of glass. Size: 6.25" W x 8.25" H (15.9 cm x 21 cm)

Condition Report: Rim repaired from three pieces, stable fissure on rim. Surface wear and weathering film commensurate with age. Old inventory label on the neck. Rainbow iridescence throughout. Three dimples in the body from glass blowing process.
