Roman Glass Vessel - Gorgeous Aubergine
Roman, Late Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. A lovely free-blown glass vessel of particularly striking aubergine hues, the form comprised of an apple-shaped body on a dimpled base with a broken pontil scar, and a tubular neck that gently flares to a funnel mouth with an outfolded rib. In addition to presenting brilliant purple hues - truly the color of red wine, the piece boasts attractive translucence and areas of rainbow iridescence in violet, aqua, royal blue, and emerald green hues as well. Size: 3.125" in diameter x 3.75" H (7.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

Condition Report: Intact and excellent. Pontil scar indicates that this vessel was free blown. (The absence of such a mark would suggest that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.) Normal areas of earthen and mineral deposits. Gorgeous translucence as well as rainbow iridescence.
