Roman Glazed Pilgrim's Flask, Lion Heads

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A brilliant mold-formed pottery vessel enveloped in a lustrous glaze of a turquoise hue with an ovoid foot, circular lentoid body, a thin tubular neck, and a flared rim connected to the body via two looped handles. Both flat sides are adorned with protruding tondos featuring a striped border surrounding the head of a lion with a fluffy mane, round eyes, a furrowed brow, a bulbous snout, and an incised nose and mouth. Size: 4.5" L x 3" W x 5.5" H (11.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
