Roman Gold Ring with Serapis Gemstone

2nd-3rd century AD. A gold finger ring comprising a D-section hoop, bezel with applied fluted rim, cell with inset carnelian intaglio bust of Serapis, bearded with modius. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 187 for type. 11.8 grams, 19.92mm overall, 11.94x15.42mm internal diameter (approximate size British E, USA 2 1/4, Europe 2.41, Japan 2) (3/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s.
