Roman / Hellenistic Glass Jar, Feather-Combed Pattern
Ca. 100 BCE – 100 CE. Roman or Late Hellenistic, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. Globular jar of dark translucent brown-black glass, wrapped in an allover feather pattern of combed opaque red and white canes. The trails were laid horizontally and dragged at close, regular intervals, pulling each band into a row of overlapping scallops that spiral around the vessel from the flaring rim to the base. The combing holds its regularity across the full circumference, where on many surviving examples the intervals wander. The rim is everted and rounded, its underside likewise decorated, and the interior retains the dark ground unadorned. Size: 3.25" Diam x 3.48" H (8.3 cm Diam x 8.8 cm H).
Provenance: private North East Coast, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
