Roman Large Lead Ingot
1st-2nd century AD. A substantial lead pig (ingot) with flat base and chamfered sides, reserved partial inscription to central recess on the upper face ''[.]VVII AIIO CAESA AVG[.]' . 72 kg, 55cm (21 1/2 "). Property of a South London collector; previously acquired on the European art market 1970-1980. The legible inscription ''[.]VVII AIIO CAESA AVG[.]' is enigmatic. The final elements ''CAESA AVG' clearly refer to 'Caesar Augustus' (blessed Caesar"). The first 'VV' might refer to '(Legio XX) Valeria Victrix' with the 'L XX' absent from or no longer traceable the beginning.
Condition Report: Fine condition.
