Roman Lead Lidded Pyxis / Cosmetic Holdeer

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $200**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A charming pyxis, a round box with a separate lid. It bears similarities to a lekanis, a low, lidded bowl, but lacks the twin handles and broad foot that most scholars attribute to a lekanis. The pyxis form is found throughout the ancient Near East and the Classical world: a rounded vessel with small fitted lid, originally made to hold cosmetics, trinkets, or jewelry. Later Christian examples were made to hold the Host. Size with lid: 2.55" W x 1.75" H (6.5 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#124021
Condition Report: Piece has pale patina and encrusted deposits. The base is intact. The lower part of the lid has losses as shown, especially on one side.
