Roman Marble Eagle's Head
1st-2nd century AD. A carved white marble head of an eagle, curved beak with nostril and mouth detailing, alert open eye, feather detailing to the head and neck; originally part of a larger statue. 259 grams, 90mm (3 1/2"). Ex an important Dutch collection; acquired on the European art market in the 1970s. The head was only supposed to be viewed from one side as there are no details on the right side.
