Roman Marble Head of a Youth
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A handsome, realistic marble head of a youth with a close-cropped wavy/curled coiffure presenting luxurious curls falling just above his neckline and wavy locks framing his handsome face. The details of his visage are very fine - generously lidded, almond-shaped, eyes, an arched brow line leading to a naturalistic nose, closed heart-shaped lips, a nicely defined chin, earlobes peeking out from his hair, and well-modeled cherubic facial planes. The classicizing features and the treatment of the eyes suggest that this sculpture was created during the Julio-Claudian Period. A wonderful piece of sculpture from ancient Rome! Size: 6.125" H (15.6 cm); 9.875" H (25.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s
