Roman Marble Torso of a Nude Male Youth

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Finely carved from white marble, a torso of a male, nude presenting well-defined male genitalia and overall anatomy as well as a wonderful suggestion of movement. His weight is ever-so-slightly shifted to his left leg and his right leg slightly shifted to the side raising his hip just a tad. Notice also how the figure's pelvis and thorax tilt in opposite directions, presenting a rhythmic sense of motion that suggests lifelike energy in this figure. Such calculated poses intended to conjure human vitality in sculpture were inspired by the works of Polykleitos and became the model to which sculptors aspired in Graeco-Roman as well as later Western European art.
