Roman Master , around 1600 Birth of Christ / Nativity

[ translate ]

The Nativity with the Adoration of the Shepherds traditionally portrays a nocturnal setting, yet in this painting, the anonymous artist presents a charming and convincing compositional approach. The infant Jesus, nestled in the manger atop a white cloth, radiates brilliantly amidst the darkness, symbolizing Christ's proclamation, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12), and "And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not taken hold of it" (John 1:5). The birth scene is meticulously symmetrical, with the manger at its heart, flanked by Mary in reverent adoration on the left and St. Joseph, hands raised in awe, on the right. Two cherubs offer their worship from behind the crib, while shepherds emerge from the shadows to witness the miraculous event on both sides. The backdrop of the stable ruins frames a vista of the landscape, where the Annunciation to the shepherds unfolds. Above the tableau, heavenly light pierces through torn clouds, as two putti present a scroll bearing the inscription "Gloria in excelsis Deo" (Glory to God in the highest), echoing the angels' proclamation to the shepherds in Luke 2:14, and heralding the joyous news of Christ's birth. Oil on copper 45.5 × 33.5 cm
