Roman N. African Terra Sigillata Dish w/ Stamped Motifs

Roman, North Africa, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A lovely wheel-thrown redware pottery dish of a squat form that rests atop a flat base. The vessel features broad walls, a shallow basin, and a groove between the rim and basin that was meant to accommodate a lid. The center of the basin is decorated with a five-pointed star surrounded by 17 concentric bullseye patterns within a diagonally striated border ring. This type of pottery is known as African Terra Sigillata, referring to the method used to seal the red slip onto the pottery during the firing process. These objects were traded far and wide throughout the Roman Empire and were Roman North Africa's leading export from the 3rd to 4th century CE. Size: 12.4" W x 2" H (31.5 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
