LOT 0037

Roman North African Pottery Terra Sigillata Footed Bowl

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Northern Africa, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A petite and mold-made redware pottery terra sigillata bowl with a concave footed base, broad walls, an arching rim, and a shallow interior. The rim displays a decorative register of eight abstract sinuous forms with teardrop-shaped bodies - perhaps phytomorphic seed pods or highly-stylized geese - in low relief. The name "terra sigillata" translates literally to "sealed earth" - referring to the method used to seal the applied red slip onto the pottery during the kilning process - though the colloquial meaning translates to "clay bearing little images." A wonderful example from Roman North Africa! Size: 5" W x 1.75" H (12.7 cm x 4.4 cm).

Provenance: private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#134029
Condition Report: Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, very minor nicks around rim and foot, some roughness and pitting within interior, and light fading to slip pigmentation. Nice encrustations and earthen deposits throughout.
