Roman North African Redware Lagynos / Flagon

Roman, North Africa, Imperial Period, ca. 4th century CE. A large wheel-thrown redware pottery lagynos (which translates to "flagon") with a circular base, a wide lower body with a prominent, projecting midsection, a rounded shoulder which gradually tapers to a conical neck, a collared rim, and an applied strap handle joining neck to shoulder. Primarily used to contain wine or other potable liquids, flagons were invented to provide hydrations to field laborers or rowers aboard ships. Size: 6.75" W x 7.875" H (17.1 cm x 20 cm).

Condition Report: Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, minor nicks to handle, base, and rim, with light roughness across most surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Light encrustations along rim, and nice earthen deposits throughout.
