Roman North African Redware Oil Lamp w/ Chi Rho

Roman, North Africa, Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A mold-formed redware pottery oil lamp of a substantial size with a circular foot, gradually expanding walls, a pair of fill holes within the recessed tondo, a pointed handle, and a broad wick spout in front of a narrow neck channel. Surrounding the tondo is a low relief register of acanthus leaves. Within the neck channel is the Chi Rho, one of the earliest Christograms and symbols of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Size: 4.9" W x 1.75" H (12.4 cm x 4.4 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
