Roman Patera with Ram's Head Handle
2nd century AD. A carved marble patera comprising: shallow pan with chamfered internal rim, segmented underside, pierced flange to the rear, low-relief image of a lion pouncing on a fleeing ibex; sturdy ribbed handle with ram's head finial; Eastern Empire. 1.65 kg, 39cm (15 1/2"). From the private collection of a Canadian gentleman; from his father's collection formed 1965 - 1990.
