Roman Pottery Double Spouted Oil Lamp
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to early 5th century CE. A fine double-spouted mold-formed pottery oil lamp featuring a circular base and short bulbous body with a recessed tondo encompassing a petite fill hole embellished with 4 impressed circles and 6 raised ovoid motifs forming a phytomorphic design. A handle is placed on the back, while two long necks, each adorned with a pair of spiral-tipped volutes, protrude from the body, each displaying a circular blow hole. Double-spouted oil lamps, like this example, are exceedingly rare when made from pottery due to the complexity of the design in conjunction with the fragility of the material. Size: 4.75" L x 2.625" in diameter x 1" H (12.1 cm x 6.7 cm x 2.5 cm)
Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
