Roman Pottery Footed Incense Burner

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A mold-formed pottery incense burning dish with a tiered square base supported by a quartet of stylized lion feet. A stocky pedestal expands upwards to a square incense dish, and a scalloped rim lines the periphery. Calcified white remains within the basin show that this vessel contained incense when inhumed, perhaps as a funerary offering. Size: 3.25" W x 4.8" H (8.3 cm x 12.2 cm).

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired between 2005 and 2008; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection

Condition Report: Repaired from multiple pieces, with restoration to areas of base, upper body, and rim, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and nicks to feet, base, neck, and upper body, with calcified encrustations within basin, and light encrustations elsewhere. Ample calcified remains within basin.
