Roman Red Slipware Flagon w/ Screw Neck - ex Ede

Roman, North Africa, Imperial period, ca. 2nd century CE. A wheel-thrown slipware pottery flagon exhibiting vibrant remains of the original red-orange color. The bulbous vessel features a compressed body with a pronounced ridge along the midsection, a rounded shoulder that narrows to form the base of the neck, a bifurcated handle arching along the verso, and a screw-form neck that spirals upwards until terminating with a flared rim. The narrow foot enables the vessel to maintain its upright balance even when filled with liquid. Size: 5" W x 5.625" H (12.7 cm x 14.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-property from the George R. Francoeur Trust, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, sold to benefit the George R. Francoeur Scholarship Fund at Cranbrook Academy of Art, acquired in December 1988 from Charles Ede, Ltd., London, UK
