On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante's death (1265-1321) , Catawiki is dedicating an auction to the Supreme Poet focused on the coins of his time and on those related to the characters of his Divine Comedy. # dante700memorial DANTE, AENEA and ANCHISE AND THE DIVINE COMEDY Aeneas is mentioned for the first time by Dante in Inf. , I, 73-74, when Virgil presents himself as the poet who sang about the righteous / son of Anchises. Dante names him again in Inf. , II, 13-27 with the periphrasis of Silvio the relative (Silvio's father, born from the marriage with Lavinia and succeeded his brother Ascanio in the government of Alba Longa) , as Aeneas had been the protagonist as St. Paul of a journey to the Underworld, the one narrated by Virgil himself in book VI of the Aeneid. Dante does not feel up to making such a journey and cites the example of Aeneas, chosen by God as the founder of the alma Rome and his empire. Aeneas is then described among the "great spirits" of Limbo (Inf. , IV, 122) , alongside Hector, the greatest Trojan hero, and Caesar, the first Roman emperor.
