A sheet silver bowl with broad base, carinated profile, rolled rim; Greek repoussé scene depicting a large nude Herakles banqueting, reclining on an animal skin holding his emblematic club in the crook of his left arm and a drinking bowl in his raised right hand, attended by two smaller youths each wearing a kilt, filling the bowl from a wineskin; egg-and-dart border to the scene; the rim with pointillé legend in mixed Greek and Roman pseudo-inscription 'PO?I?TENEA? {?} EPE NEAT I?TER.NA?KOAPA IEAGOMEAH ?RE?YHTAMINE'; probably Eastern Mediterranean workmanship. 126 grams, 16.5cm (6 1/2"). Property of a Suffolk collector; formerly acquired on the European art market in the 1990s.
