Roman Silver Military Mount with Face
2nd century AD. A silver military mount comprising: central roundel with facing male bust modelled in the half-round; four radiating pelta-shaped plaques with curled ends, interstitial pelta-shaped arms, pierced lugs for attachment. Cf. Appels, A. & Laycock, S. Roman Buckles and Military Fittings, Witham, 2007, item AA9.9 for type. 15 grams, 56mm (2 1/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. The central face is very youthful with Claudian hairstyle, possibly representing a deity.
