Roman Silver Ring with Lion Gemstone

3rd century AD. A substantial silver ring, a marriage of a D-section hoop with expanding shoulders, flat scaphoid plaque with inset red jasper intaglio, engraved with an advancing lion on a baseline. 27.16 grams, 33.92mm overall, 18.36mm internal diameter (approximate size British L 1/2, USA 6, Europe 11.87, Japan 11) (1 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent.
