Roman Socketted Spearhead

1st-2nd century AD. An iron spearhead with forged seam, conical socket with holes for riveting and shallow ridged leaf-shaped point, narrow blade. Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. The spearhead belonged with all probability to a Roman legionary Hasta. Josephus, in his description of the Roman army weaponry of the Vespasian Age, said expressly that 'those footmen also that are chosen out from amongst the rest (epilektoi pezoi) to be about the general himself, have a lance (lonchês) and a buckler; but the rest of the foot soldiers have a spear and a long shield'.
