Roman Statuette of Mars
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze figure of Mars in full military array including crested helmet, lorica segmentata cuirass, tunic with elbow-length sleeves and knee-length skirt, calf-length military boots, left hand in open pose (to grip the rim of a shield?) and right hand raised, open to grasp a weapon or vexillum military standard; mounted on a tubular finial with two substantial attachment loops. 382 grams, 20cm (8"). Property of a Dutch gentleman; formerly in an old collection formed in the 1970s.
