Roman Statuette of a Youth Riding a Goat

1st century AD. A carved marble statue fragment depicting the muscular body of a quadruped (goat or lion?) supporting a male youth (Faunus?) with belt to the waist and mantle to the left shoulder, leaning forward in a vigorous pose with arms spread to the front and rear, with youthful face with tousled curls; on the shoulder of the beast, a large human right foot; mounted on a custom-made stand. 2.9 kg, 27cm including stand (10 1/2"). Property of a French gentleman; on loan to and previously exhibited at the Antikenmuseum, Basel, 1969; in the collection of Mrs H.S., Switzerland, since 1950.
