Roman Terracotta Figure - Playful Cherubs

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A hollow-molded terracotta figure of two cherubs shown in playful combat atop an integral rectangular plinth. Both nude figures have chubby legs and arms, child-like faces with curly coiffures, and plumed wings spread out along the verso. One figure gently grabs the other around the waist, and the figure in the foreground grasps the tightly-bound arms. Traces of original white, orange, and green pigment are visible within some recessed areas and indicate that this figure was at one time decorated with vivid pigment. Size: 2.625" W x 4" H (6.7 cm x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Gorny & Mosch

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
