Roman Terracotta Relief Plaque Fragment w/ Gorgon Face

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fragmentary terracotta plaque bearing the mold-formed face of a female gorgon in high relief. The finely preserved countenance presents with almond eyes within thick lids, a broad nose with slightly flared nostrils, full lips between fleshy cheeks, shallow wrinkles centered on the forehead, and remains of white pigment accentuating several areas. The shaggy coiffure covers the entire top section of the head and drapes down the right side of the face. A section of swooping grooves along the top-right corner suggests this plaque was part of a larger composition, perhaps with additional faces and figures. Condition Report: A fragment of a larger composition. Encrustations and softening to some finer details, with fading to pigmentation, and nicks around peripheries and along verso. Nice preservation to face and pigment remains.
